What to expect

Sports Camp was developed over 30 years ago to address the needs of students with visual impairments who were being left behind in gym class and school sports. We do this by introducing young athletes who are blind or visually impaired to athletic training, adaptive sports techniques, and friendly competition. Our goal is to send the young athletes home to participate in sports with their sighted peers.

Typical sports we teach include basic movement patterns (jump, throw, etc.), track & field (high jump, long jump, discus, shot put), swimming, hockey, 5-a-side soccer, goalball, judo, tandem cycling, cross country, and general wellness (yoga, healthy diet, aerobics, weight training, etc.).

Sports Camp is a one week camp held on the campus of Western Michigan University every May. We stay on campus in the dorms. This week is broken down into two sessions: Junior Camp (May 3-5) and Senior Camp (May 6-9). The week is fast paced and time intensive. Our volunteers work in groups and one-on-one with the athletes.

It is a lot of work and a lot of fun. Due to the exciting nature of Sports Camp and the friendly, family atmosphere of our volunteer staff, we tend to hold on to volunteers. In fact, some of us have been coming for over 30 years! It is an experience that you will never forget, and hopefully, you will become part of the family that devotes a week every year to this wonderful endeavor!
